Why Is My Locking Wheel Nut Stuck? Common Causes and Solutions
A stuck locking wheel nut is rarely down to bad luck. In most cases there is a clear cause, and knowing it can help you avoid the problem next time.
Over tightening
Locking wheel nuts become stuck when they are tightened past the recommended torque settings supplied by manufacturers. This is typically done by tyre shops or mechanics who impact gun the nuts on rather than tightening them with a torque wrench. The nut is then far tighter than it should be, and removing it later becomes very difficult.
Cross threading
Another common cause is cross threading. Locking wheel nuts, and even normal wheel bolts, can be cross threaded when they were installed last, which causes a huge headache for the next person trying to remove them.
What to do if your nut is stuck
To avoid further damage, call us to remove it. We carry the correct specialist tools and have the proper techniques to remove stuck nuts successfully. Please avoid attempting it yourself, as extra force can round the nut or damage the thread.

How to prevent it happening again
When you next have tyres fitted or wheels refitted, ask the fitter to tighten the nuts with a torque wrench to the manufacturer's setting rather than relying on an impact gun.
