How to Remove Rounded Wheel Bolts
A rounded wheel bolt is one of the most frustrating problems a driver can face. The corners of the bolt head have worn away, so a standard socket spins instead of gripping. Here is how it happens and how it is put right.
How do wheel bolts become rounded?
The most common cause is over tightening. When wheel bolts are fastened far beyond the correct setting, usually with an impact gun, they become extremely tight. When someone then tries to remove them, the socket slips and the corners round off.
How we remove rounded wheel bolts
We carry high end specialised tools designed to bite onto rounded bolts that ordinary sockets cannot grip. Once secure, we apply extreme torque using commercial breaker bars to release the bolt in a controlled way.
Because we are a mobile service, we come to you, whether that is at home, at work or at the roadside. You can see our dedicated page on mobile rounded wheel and nut removal for more information.
An honest note on guarantees
Rounded wheel bolts can be difficult, and we can never guarantee removal. In some rare instances a bolt will need welding, which is something we do not offer and which only workshops provide. However, it is always best to call us first, as our mobile service and technique is the most cost effective and quickest route in the vast majority of cases.
Please do not DIY this at home
It is best not to attempt this yourself. Hammering sockets on, using pliers or applying heat can make the bolt worse and turn a straightforward job into a complicated one. Before you try anything, have a look at our home page and give us a call.
